The world that Helward Mann inhabits is totally different from our own. He was born and grew up in the City, whose rulers guarded their secrets carefully and denied the existence of the sun. But when he comes of age he is ready for initiation into the secrets of the City, and those of his guild, the Future Surveyors. He is allowed to go outside the City, and there he sees the sun, and finds that the City is constantly on the move, desperately keeping pace with the backward movement of their world. The City and its people have survived in an environment that denies their existence, and when the truth is finally revealed, the mystery solved, Helward's whole life is shattered.
